OIL PALM PRODUCTION  
 
 
 
OIL PALM is scientifically known as: Elaeis guineensis
 
Commonly known as: African Oil Palm
 
It is a tropical plant which commonly grows in warm climates at altitudes of less than 1,600 feet above sea level.
 
It produces one of the most popular edible oils in the world. A versatile oil of superb nutritional value.
 
Its oil is rich in carotene, it could be used in place of cod liver oil for correcting vitamin A deficiency and is cholesterol free.
 
The palm is normally monoic; it has both male and female inflorescence.
 
 
 
HISTORY OF PALM OIL PRODUCTION  
 
1900  
oil palm plantations were established in Central Africa and Southeast Asia.
   
1930  
250,000 tons (metric tons) of palm oil were produced for world trade
   
1962-1982  
world exports of palm oil rose from 500,000 to 2.4 million tons per annum
   
1990  
world production was 11 million tons per annum and world trade of 8.5 million tons
     
1961-2000  
palm and palm kernel oils doubled their combined shares from 12 to 27%.
     
   
The palm oil’s importance within global oil production has grown; it has pulled up the overall share of exports in world vegetable oil output from 1961 – 2000.
 
2006-2007  
world edible oil production to increase to 124.1 million tons (123.1 Mt vegetable oil production and 1.0 Mt of marine oil)
 
SOME BASIC FACTS  
  • Philippine import 60% of oil palm requirements
  • More or less, only 29,000 hectares Oil palm planted in the Phils. (excluding the area planted in Bukidnon).
  • 45% maturing palms, at 20-30 years of age soon need replacement
  • Target to plant/develop at least 104,000 hectares by year 2010.
  • Only 4,000 hectares per year target expansion  by Agumil Philippines, Inc. and 1,000 hectares per year by Filipinas Oil Palm Plantations, Inc.
  • Vast tracts of developed under-productive and non-productive lands are available.
  • Availability of technology on Oil Palm Cultivation.
  • The country has favorable climate for oil palm cultivation.
  • Increase consumption of oil from 8 to10 kilograms per capita per year (UP study).
  • Oil Palm cultivation generates  various job opportunities  for general workers and professionals.
